#PRogressSU is an annual event held at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Inspired by a trip to NYC, three graduate students and myself started what is now a yearly event that focuses on how the Public Relations industry is progressing. The theme each year is student decided; the event student driven.

2018: Women Discussing Diversity, Inclusion, and Leadership in Public Relations: A one-night panel discussion spotlighting local women in public relations, with a special focus on diversity and inclusion. The event was meant to address several systemic inequalities in the public relations workforce. The panel discussed the experiences of women of various races, ages, and backgrounds in public relations and also brainstormed various solutions to fix equality issues within the field. This event and the subsequent case study was researched, planned, and executed by three of my graduate students, Katherine Arts, John Boudreau, and Haley Filippone. 2019: Millennials: Changing the Landscape of Public Relations – Brand loyalty is paramount to Millennials. In this event, guest speakers talked about how this enigmatic generation has changed public relations and marketing. Planned and executed by PR graduate students Selin Demir and Marissa Perry-Sharpe. 2020: Sistas’ of Media: An event honoring black women in the media profession. To celebrate Black History Month, the Public Relations department hosted ‘Sistas of Media’ honoring black women in media. Part of the long-running series #PRogressSU, guest panelists discussed challenges and opportunities for black women in the media profession. Planned and executed by PR graduate student Cierra Johnson. Mindful Inclusion SU

The Mindful Inclusion campaign aimed to create an open forum discussion surrounding what it means to be “included” on the campus at Syracuse University.  With guest facilitator Orlando Bailey leading the panel, we were able to successfully execute an event that was welcomed with strong conversation on social media such as Twitter. Planned and executed by undergraduate PR students Cayla Dorsey, James Fegan, Laura Nolan, Kennedy Smith and Rubin Wright. Download the case study:

Gina I would just like to say that you really used my case study (Day of Silence) in a great way and I approve. That being said for the future I would be honored to write more case studies and be a part of whatever projects you have. I look forward to this coming fall for the work we will accomplish.
